Fish Friends Program Timeline:

September-November 1st:
Schools sign up with Coordinator to request permits to raise Atlantic Salmon
January-February:
Fish Friends “Mentors” help schools set up their equipment; eggs arrive
March-May:
Atlantic Salmon develop; teachers incorporate Fish Friends curriculum
May-Early June:
Participants organize field trips to release young salmon fry in nearby streams

Program Logistics:

All you need to participate, besides the permit you’ll receive after signing up in the fall, is:

  • Equipment to raise salmon, including, but not limited to: a tank, chiller, and filters. Estimated first time setup cost: $1,300. Equipment and funding support is sometimes available. Be sure to check in with Fish Friends Coordinator about the exact equipment required before you purchase equipment. A sample equipment list is available here.
  • The ability to lead an educational field trip to release the salmon fry during late spring.
  • A passion for experiential education!
